The origins of the Vegvisir : the viking compass
Among ancient stories & legends, many symbols are well known by the fans and/or enthusiasts of Nordic history. One of the best known, sometimes referred to as the “Viking compass” or the GPS of ancient times for us : let's come back at the origins of the Vegvisir
Sometimes tattooed, sometimes worn on oak runes, we take a look at this often misunderstood symbol.
The origins of Vegvisir :
First of all, let's break down a myth: the Vegvisir is not a Viking symbol as you might think, but a symbol found in a Huld manuscript (an old grimoire of magic) that appeared 6 centuries after the end of the Viking era!
But how to explain this misinterpretation?
Don't worry, Runes de chêne is here to help !
Popularized by the Viking series, the vegvisir was directly associated with this period, but more importantly, our Viking compass is very similar to the terror helmet (or Ægishjálmur), which also has six branches but with equal patterned endings, unlike our Vegvisir.
Meanings and differences between the Vegvisir and the Helmet of terror
The Ægishjálmur, also known as the “Helmet of Terror”, and the Vegvisir are two distinct symbols often associated with Norse mythology and Icelandic magic. Although both are symbols of protection, their meanings differ.
- The Ægishjálmur, mentioned as a symbol of power and domination, was supposed to inspire fear in enemies and offer protection to the wearer on the battlefield. It is strongly associated with the idea of victory and invincibility, which is why it can be found on archaeological remains such as shields and helmets.
- The Vegvisir, meanwhile, is, as mentioned earlier, an Icelandic runic treasure; it too is a symbol of protection, but not in combat with the enemy. Rather, it is a guide for both physical and spiritual journeys.
The use of the Vegvisir: Between tradition and modernity
Traditionally, the Vegvisir was once inscribed on the forehead with blood on its wearer to maximize its effects. Don't worry, we're not going to ask you to sacrifice a deer and make it a bloody inscription in your Morning routine in order to share the significance of our Icelandic compass.
And since we're friendly here at Runes de chêne, here are a few tips for simple and effective use:
- Consider the meaning of this one, because it's not just a super classy symbol but there's a whole message behind it as you've read!
- Surround your vegvisir with runes: yes, the vegvisir features not only the cardinal points or the 9 cosmic realms of Nordic beliefs (depending on what theories say, as there's nothing official), but also runes around it, as some representations show. Don't hesitate to incorporate some around it to maximize these effects, adding them to those of the runes and adding even more aestheticism.
- Incorporate your own meaning: a symbol of good fortune in travel and epic journeys, they can be both physical and psychic. Whether you're off on a long journey to explore the world or your spirit is leading you on a long quest, personalize your vegvisir and make it as unique as you are!

Today, the Vegvisir continues to fascinate and inspire us with its visual and symbolic reminder that, whatever the storms and mountains we climb, there is always a direction to follow.
Whether through a tattoo, a sweatshirt or a treasured object, those who choose to wear this symbol find in its lines a form of reassurance, a strength to keep moving forward despite the uncertainties of modern life, and a home where their courage can remain.
